Feature Analysis of Hyperpolarized Helium-3 Pulmonary MRI in Asthmatics versus Non-Asthmatics

چکیده
Computational techniques for parenchymal characterization using CT have demonstrated significant research potential [1, 2]. We describe similar quantitative analysis of the lung using hyperpolarized helium-3 MR ventilation image data. This study consisted of a total of 55 subjects (47 asthmatics and 8 non-asthmatics). Each subject was imaged both before and after respiratory challenge. Additionally, each subject underwent a complete pulmonary function exam. Following image acquisition, approximately 1600 statistical features were calculated from the segmented lungs (and sub-regions) in each image. Each of these features were ranked along with the 27 pulmonary function test (PFT) values using a mutual information based feature subset selection algorithm. It is shown that several image features perform much better in characterizing clinical diagnosis compared with the current clinical gold-standard PFT values.

متن کاملUsing Free-breathing Proton Ventilation MRI to Evaluate Treatment Response in Asthma
Purpose: Hyperpolarized noble gas magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides a way to map both functional and structural pulmonary information. Specifically in asthmatics, inhaled hyperpolarized gas MRI has been used to evaluate bronchoconstriction (methacholine-challenge [MCh]) and bronchodilation (salbutamol), showing ventilation defects that respond to MCh and salbutamol [1]. Fourier decompos...
متن کاملHyperpolarized 3He MR lung ventilation imaging in asthmatics: preliminary findings.
Asthma is a disease characterized by chronic inflammation and reversible obstruction of the small airways resulting in impaired pulmonary ventilation. Hyperpolarized 3He magnetic resonance (MR) lung imaging is a new technology that provides a detailed image of lung ventilation. Hyperpolarized 3He lung imaging was performed in 10 asthmatics and 10 healthy subjects. Seven asthmatics had ventilati...
متن کاملPractice Appointment Rates for High-risk Asthmatics: What could be the Predictor(s)?
Practice appointment rates could have a significant impact on national health care costs and services offered by doctors. In this respect a study was designed to determine the relationship between practice appointments and possible predictors in high-risk asthmatics. An observational retrospective analysis of the predictors for the practice appointments in asthmatic patients with at least one h...
متن کاملCytokine production from sputum cells in eosinophilic versus non-eosinophilic asthmatics.
The inflammatory pathways involved in asthma are more complex than the sole Th2-mediated eosinophilic airway inflammation. Different phenotypes of asthma have been recently highlighted and are probably underlied by different immunological profiles. The aim of the study was to assess cytokine production from sputum cells in eosinophilic versus non-eosinophilic asthmatics. Induced sputum was obta...
